Eagle man dies in backcountry

EAGLE COUNTY ” A 62-year-old Eagle man died Sunday while snowmobiling south of Eagle in the White River National Forest, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis identified the man as Mike Claussner.

Claussner was snowmobiling with a friend in the Yeoman Park backcountry area of the national forest, according to the sheriff’s office. Claussner’s friend, who officials say did not witness what happened, called authorities at 3:40 p.m. Members of the Vail Mountain Rescue Group responded to the call.

Yeoman park is located about 15 miles south off Eagle on East Brush Creek Road.

When officials reached the scene, they discovered Claussner and a snowmobile rolled on its side, according to the sheriff’s office.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be done today, Bettis said.
