AVON, Colorado – For the second time in 10 years, Eagle River Fire Protection District hosted a reunion for former residents firefighters.

A resident firefighter is a young male or female that lives at one of the stations and works a normal schedule like a full-time firefighter. In exchange for working the schedule, the district pays for their college degree in fire science at Colorado Mountain College.

“We had members from the East Coast and the West Coast come in for the reunion,” said Lt. Alan Barry, co-chairman of the reunion. “It was great to see old friends and to introduce old members to the young firefighters of today.”

It is amazing to see past residents fill positions from firefighter paramedics to fire chiefs throughout the United States, said Battalion Chief Mike “Pappy” Kerst, the other co-chairman.

“A great time was had by all,” Kerst said. “The next reunion is already in the planning stage but won’t occur until five years from now.”
