Eagle River Station is wrong!

Cici Franklin
Vail, CO Colorado

The biggest reason why I chose to move to Eagle from upvalley 11 years ago was because Eagle was a “real” town with an actual downtown. It wasn’t just another exit off of the highway or a contrived development based around proximity to a resort. It was a unique community in this valley, a great place to raise a family where you knew your neighbors, your shopkeepers, your public servants.

I was and still am stunned and saddened by the prospect of a mall in Eagle, a monstrosity of a development that will forever change this very special place we are so lucky to call home.

I understand the town needs revenue in order to provide services for us, but there has to be a better way. Even if the timing wasn’t horrible for retail (and it is!), the potential negative impacts on our existing community could be devastating. I currently own a retail business downtown, but my concerns go much, much deeper than that. This whole concept seems so short-sighted. It’s the wrong idea and the wrong time.

I certainly don’t have the answers to our revenue-stream drought, but can’t we look toward a vision for Eagle that would really set us apart? Isn’t there something we could do to create a truly bright spot in our future for Eagle and make it “the place to be” for forward-thinking, sustainable-living-minded individuals? Wouldn’t it be great to live in a place that is participating in making this world a healthier global community?

That’s exciting to consider. Another shopping mall is not! Please, think about what is truly important.
