Eagle-Vail: Highway 6 closed three more weeks
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado ” The stretch of U.S. Highway 6 between Kayak Crossing apartments and the Interstate 70 interchange at Dowd Junction will be closed until the week of May 19.
After that, at least one lane of U.S. Highway 6 will be open. That could last until the end of August, said Nancy Shanks, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.
A mudslide buried a lane, crushed a metal retaining wall and closed a one-mile stretch of the highway April 13.
Both lanes of the highway will be open at night, when crews close lanes to work on the interstate between Dowd Junction and East Vail, Shanks said.
Crews have to drill 100-foot metal rods encased with concrete into the hillside to make sure the interstate doesn’t cave in, Shanks said. That’s the reason for the extended closure, she said.
“The wall is right underneath I-70, so certainly that’s a concern,” she said.
