EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado – Remodeling the old Battle Mountain High School in Eagle-Vail into a pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school would cost just under $24.2 million, a new district cost estimate suggests.

Eagle County school board president Scott Green said that figure came in considerably higher than he expected. Green said he’s looking into ways to trim the cost.

He expects the board to discuss the price tag at tonight’s meeting.

The estimate is part of a larger discussion on whether the district should convert the old high school into a pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school for current Minturn Middle and Meadow Mountain students.

Green said the board could reach a decision tonight.

“I would expect it’s going to be a continuing discussion,” he said.

Another estimate showed building a new school on the property for pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students would cost about $32.7 million. That figure includes the cost of tearing down the old Battle Mountain high and adjacent Meadow Mountain elementary.

Green said the board isn’t considering building a new school but wanted to get that cost figure for comparison purposes.

The estimate for building a new school accounts for a 90,000-square-foot building that could house 400 students, Green said. The remodel figure relates to upgrading the existing, 122,000-square-foot high school so it could accommodate up to 600 students, Green confirmed.

He said potential sources of funding for the school remodel could include:

• $3 million from a $128 million bond voters approved in 2006 for construction projects

• $4 million in cost savings from building the new Battle Mountain High School in Edwards and remodeling Eagle Valley High School in Gypsum

• Selling district property to off set the cost

• Asking for voter approval to borrow money for the project
