Eagle Valley, Battle Mountain XC fast in Arizona and Junction

Yes, it was Homecoming weekend for most of the local preps universe. But there is no rest if you’re a runner.

Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain cross-country spent Homecoming weekend being fast in different states.

Nike Desert Twilight XC Festival

This is, at least, the fourth state of the calendar year for the Blairs. Having already competed in Colorado (early and often) as well as the Texas and Kansas relays (last spring), the sisters took their show to the Nike Desert Twilight XC Festival on Friday night in Casa Grande, Arizona.

With the Nike event drawing the best runners from around the region, roughly considered Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, Samantha Blair was fourth in 17 minutes, 14 seconds and Joslin Blair sixth in 17:18.

Those are, for lack of a better term, smoking-fast times. Yes, they were recorded at the comparatively low altitude of Arizona (roughly 1,300 feet), but we go back to the jargon term of smoking fast.

For comparison, Samantha’s fastest time at altitude this season was 17:33 at the Liberty Bell, a traditionally fast meet in Littleton earlier this month. Samantha ran at last year’s Nike Desert race in September and loped off a whopping 35 seconds from year time in 2018 (17:49).

Joslin ran a 17:25 in the Nike Desert race last September and was good for a 9-second improvement this weekend.

Meanwhile, in Junction …

Battle Mountain cross-country used the weekend to scope out the CHSAA 4A Region 1 Meet course in Grand Junction at the Warrior Lincoln Park Classic.

The regional meet will bee here in October and the Battle Mountain ladies apparently found the course to their liking.

The Huskies put their five scorers in the top 14, led by Grace Johnson in 18 minutes, 2 seconds. Johnson won the race, her third individual victory of the season.

The 18:02 is getting pretty close to Val Constien’s school record of 17:55. Just keep that in mind when the team is back in Junction looking for regional title No. 9 in a row.

Meanwhile, after an impressive showing in which the Huskies boys finished with five runners faster than 18 minutes last weekend at St. Vrain, Battle Mountain had its five run quicker than 17 minutes on Friday.
