Eagle Valley Middle School earns Governor’s award

EAGLE – A local middle school is among Colorado’s best academic achievers for the fourth straight year.
Eagle Valley Middle School won another Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award.
The award is based largely on the state’s standardized testing, and EVMS scores have improved markedly for each of the last four years.
“We are very proud to receive this award again, because this means that kids are showing exceptional growth on their TCAP scores,” said Catherine Jarnot, EVMS principal. “Eagle Valley Middle School students are exceeding expectations for growth in reading, writing and math.”

Overall Improvement
The school has improved year after year across all demographic categories, Jarnot said, including free and reduced lunch eligible, minority students, students with disabilities, English language learners and students needing to catch up.
The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards are given to schools that demonstrate significant student growth. It’s based on the state’s performance framework.
In 2014, 128 schools earned the award, exceeding those expectations over three years.
An award ceremony was held at the Colorado Department of Education in Denver. Commissioner Robert Hammond honored schools and districts that earned awards in 10 categories.
“The students and staff at EVMS have created a culture of academic excellence,” Jarnot said.
