Castle Peak Senior Care — the 64-bed skilled nursing and assisted living senior care facility proposed in Eagle — has met its $4.4 million fund-raising goal.

Augustana Care, a Minnesota based non profit organization that owns and manages 23 senior care projects is partnering with Eagle County to build the Castle Peak Senior Care Community. Augustana hopes to break ground in 2014 at its five-acre site located immediately north of Brush Creek Elementary School in the Eagle Ranch neighborhood. The 62,000 square foot project will include 22 skilled nursing beds, 20 assisted living apartments, 12 memory care beds and 10 transitional care units.

This week Augustana Care CEO Tim Tucker announced that the Castle Peak Senior Care Community’s capital campaign goal has been achieved.

“This project was begun by Dr. Tom Steinberg and other Eagle County citizens more than 30 years ago and is now about to become a reality, due to the generosity of numerous donors,” said Tucker. “The support of donors throughout the county is helping to make Eagle County whole—a place where all people, regardless of age, can thrive.”

“We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” says Capital Campaign Committee Chair Merv Lapin. “The Eagle Valley community did a stellar job in securing the funding for the Castle Peak Senior Care Community.” Members of the campaign committee were Doris Dewton, Peter Feistmann, Kaye Ferry, Louise Funk, Dan Godec, Paul Gotthelf, Topper Hagerman, Deb Luginbuhl, Melissa MacDonald, Pam and Rick Smith, Jon Stavney, Kay Gudmestad, Lisa Pease, Tori Franks and Matt Scherr.

“They all did an amazing job of raising the $4.4 million in just one year. This new care community will change all our lives for the better,” said Lapin.

Stavney praised Lapin’s leadership efforts on behalf of the committee. “Merv really put his heart into making sure this need was met for the whole community,” Stavney said.

$4.4 million pledged

Currently the total dollar amount raised through the Castle Peak Care capital campaign is $4,438,000.

“I am delighted for the community and the committee. It happened very fast and it says a lot about this place,” said committee member Jon Stavney. “People recognize there is a gaping need for this project.”

Campaign committee members said part of the reason why the capital goal was reached quickly is because the project is truly a communitywide effort, involving the generosity of individuals, municipalities and special districts, homeowners’ associations, foundations and corporations. While the $4.4 million threshold was required to build the facility, to enhance the overall quality of living experience for Castle Peak residents, additional contributions are still needed.

Tucker noted that in addition to generous individuals who supported this effort, many local and state organizations also pledged support.

“A generous gift from Valley View Hospital put us over our goal,” says Tucker. Initial major contributors include the towns of Vail, Minturn, Gypsum, Avon and Eagle, the Eagle River Foundation, Denver Foundation and the Howard W. and Mary Louise Shaw Foundation. Additionally Eagle County Health Service District, Eagle Ranch Association, Wells Fargo Bank, Alpine Bank and the Stavros Niarchos Foundations made contributions between January and April 2014.

“The Vail Valley Medical Center, Vail Resorts and El Pomar Foundation brought us closer to our goal this summer,” said Tucker.

Stavney applauded both Valley View Hospital and Vail Valley Medical Center for their support of the Castle Peak Senior Care project. “The facility is going to have a really good relationship with both of those facilities. This effort demonstrated that Eagle is the primary downvalley location for medical services.”

What’s next?

“At Augustana Care, we look forward to meeting the health care and housing needs of Castle Peak residents and helping them live the lives that most inspire them,” Tucker saidsaid. “While there are still some crucial steps that need to be completed before construction can begin, Eagle County and Augustana Care will continue to make every effort to start construction this fall.”

In its announcement regarding the successful fund-raising effort, Augustana also announced Weitz Company has been selected to manage construction for Castle Peak Senior Care Community. The Weitz Company is located in Denver and has significant experience in communities for older adults.

“Now that a construction manager is on board, next steps include submitting applications for various permits for approval and getting final construction costs for the project,” Tucker concluded.
