Eagle adds Geoff Grimmer to fill vacant town board spot
EAGLE — Geoff Grimmer, the principal at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy and a 10-year veteran of Eagle County Schools, will be the newest member of the Eagle Town Board.
Tuesday night, Grimmer was selected from a field of eight candidates to succeed member Luis Benitez, who was elected to the town board in 2014 and is leaving the community to serve as the state’s first director of the newly created Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper announced the appointment in June.
While Grimmer was tapped for the post Tuesday night, he has not yet taken his oath of office. Benitez plans to continue on the board for a yet-undetermined period so Grimmer can familiarize himself with issues currently facing the town. Grimmer will then be officially seated as a board member.
“I am really excited to take part in supporting the continued growth and success of Eagle,” Grimmer said.
He said his belief that people in the community need to be active participants in the process led him to apply for the vacancy. He will serve until the April 2016 election and at this point, Grimmer said he hasn’t decided whether he will run in the municipal election.
“I am going to work hard to try to fill some big shoes and I am going to work really hard at that until April,” Grimmer said.
The town’s vacancy announcement drew a group of eight candidates. In addition to Grimmer, the candidates were former town board member Mikel “Pappy” Kerst, Kim Bradley, Mark Szczesny, Stephen Sheldon, Patrick Tvarkunas, Amanda Radow and Heather O’Malley. The current town board members conducted an executive session to discuss the candidates and then cast secret ballots to select the new member. After a first ballot, there was not a majority winner so a second secret ballot was held between Grimmer and Bradley, and Grimmer was the winner.
