Eagle resident Jake Pates is extremely ready to compete.

The high school sophomore, who is home-schooled, will be showcasing his skills at the Red Bull Double Pipe, an extreme snowboarding event now under way in Aspen.

Pates, son of Amy and Chris, will be going up against some of the top riders in the country. At this same event last season, the limits of snowboarding were pushed with the construction of the first ever side-by-side superpipes, challenging the world’s best snowboarders to re-invent how they look at halfpipe riding. This season those boundaries will be pushed even further with an updated course design incorporating both the massive, side-by-side superpipes as well as additional slopestyle features, making the Red Bull Double Pipe one of the largest single snow features ever built to date.

Pates’ coach, Elijah Teter has been helping his young rider meditate, stretch and do a little strength training to prepare for this event.

“I’m so stoked on the course design, with the two jumps up above the pipe, the gaps, and also the features in the pipe, along with the jump/rail combo at the bottom” said Pates. “I am so excited to be part of this competition because it allows riders to show their style and technical tricks in both Slope and Pipe in a single competition run.”
