Gypsum gets dirty
It’s time to get dirty in Gypsum.
On Saturday, July 12, the Gypsum Recreation Center and the town of Gypsum are once again hosting the Gypsum Dirty Dozen Mud Run. The event tests competitors ability to run, climb, jump, crawl, and muscle their way through the most extreme 5K mud run around. The adventurous 3.1 mile custom-built obstacle race includes mud pits, mud obstacles, tire fields, car crawls, cargo nets and more.
The starting line is at the Bella’s Market parking lot and the first wave begins at 3 p.m. The second wave is at 3:30 p.m. and the third wave at 4 p.m. The kids wave, which is just a mile, begins at 4:30 p.m. The finish line is at Lundgren Theater.
The foot race involves 12 earthy obstacles that are encountered throughout the approximately three-mile course. Children 12 and under will run two laps through the first four obstacles, a distance of about one mile.
“They are going to get really muddy,” said Scott Ruff, manager of the Gypsum Recreation Center and organizer of the event. “The depth of the mud varies. In some places it’s about a foot, and in others – where people will be crawling through pipes into water and mud on their stomachs – it’s shallower, to make it a safe depth.”
The after-party promises as fun as the actual race. Saturday finish line will feature live music with Chris Daniels and the Kings, a family water park, an adult clean-up station, complimentary post-race food, a beer garden and family mud games and activities. Registration for the race costs $40 for adults. All children under 12 may participate for $15. The cost of registration includes a T-shirt, a ticket for one beer and admission to the concert at Lundgren Theater. Non-racers may enjoy the all-day festivities, including the concert, for $15. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paid adult.
