Gypsum solicits public comment for new recreational ammenities
The town of Gypsum is in final negotiations with the Eagle County School District to acquire seven acres of undeveloped land next to the Gypsum Middle School and immediately adjacent to six acres already owned by the town.
The school district would retain 18 acres south of the Red Hill Elementary School for a future school site. Once the deal is finalized, Gypsum officials believe the expanded site will provide the town with 13 acres for additional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
The town has partnered with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and the University of Colorado Denver – Colorado Center for Community Development (CCCD) to prepare a recreational master plan for the total 13 acres west of Gypsum Middle School. From this project, the town will be able to move forward to seek funding and/or grant opportunities to help construct the amenities identified in the recreation master plan.
CCCD facilitated an open house on Jan. 14th to receive comments from the public about five different draft recreational layouts meant to initiate discussions of what people might like to see in this area.
“We received wonderful comments, ideas and suggestions,” said Lana Gallegos, Gypsum senior planner. “We would like to open up this comment period through Wednesday, Feb. 4, for anybody interested in providing additional comments.”
The five drafts will be narrowed down to two layouts for further consideration and the adoption of a written plan for the project area.
“As anticipated, many people may find that they like different components from different layouts rather than just one of the options as currently drawn. This is totally acceptable and the refinements into two layouts will try to take the most favorable components identified during this process,” said Gallegos.
Those interested in providing feedback may also stop by Gypsum Town Hall to look at the design options and leave written comments.
The draft recreational options and the feedback form is also available on the town’s website at http://www.townofgypsum.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=498 .
