Installation of solar arrays underway at Eagle County Building
Eagle County has begun the installation of two solar photovoltaic arrays at the Eagle County Building in Eagle.
The first is being installed on the south-facing roof of the Facilities Maintenance Building, and the other atop the main Eagle County Building. The project is expected to be completed and operational by the end of March.
Cost of the project after rebates will total $95,303, with funding coming from Eagle County’s Capital Improvement Project fund. SunSense Solar of Carbondale was selected through an RFP process to construct the 49.14 kilowatt project. The new system is expected to produce about 10 percent of the electricity needs of the main Eagle County campus, and will pay for itself in approximately 12 years.
Upon completion, Eagle County will have four rooftop solar projects in service, including:
Eagle County Justice Center with 18 kilowatts
Eagle River Center with 77 kilowatts
Lake Creek Village Apartments with 5 kilowatts
Eagle County Building with 49 kilowatts
An additional solar photovoltaic project will be installed at the ECO Transit bus barn in Leadville this summer, offsetting 100 percent of the electricity use at the facility. Combined, these solar electric systems will reduce county expenses by $23,000 and cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 160 metric tons per year.
Solar installations represent a significant step in furthering Eagle County’s “15 by ‘15” policy, adopted in 2013. The policy outlines a goal of a 15 percent reduction in spending on energy, fuels, water and paper by 2015 while supporting increased recycling, adoption of renewable energy sources and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The policy is an offshoot of the countywide Actively Green campaign.
