McCoy man killed in hit-and-run Thursday

WOLCOTT — A McCoy man was killed in a pre-dawn hit-and-run, and police are looking for the driver of the vehicle that they believe hit him.

Thomas Landauer, 76, died around 4 a.m. Thursday when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that left the area, said Josh Lewis, Colorado State Patrol public information officer.

The Colorado State Patrol was called at 4:45 a.m. to the scene five miles north of Wolcott on Highway 131.

Initial investigations indicate Landauer was outside his truck, a 2001 Toyota, and on the roadway when he was struck and killed. The vehicle that struck him was headed north, Lewis said.

The vehicle and the person driving it are still unknown. Evidence suggests it is a larger SUV or pickup truck with minor-to-moderate damage to the front, and possibly a broken headlamp, Lewis said.

Why Landauer was outside his vehicle is also unknown, Lewis said.

Landauer was declared dead on scene.

The State Patrol is asking anyone with information about the vehicle, driver or incident to call 970-824-6501, reference case number 4C161401.
