Week of Oct. 24, 2013

The state of Colorado committed $3.5 million more to Eagle’s Eby Creek Road project. Motorists along Eby Creek Road were experiencing lane shifts as traffic was being diverted to the new concrete area along the eastern side of the road between Chambers and I-70.



Eagle was prepping for retail marijuana. The town board approved rules for the potential new industry in anticipation for the November election.

The town of Gypsum formed a five-member committee to help sort out what Mayor Steve Carver referred to as a “rat’s nest” of code enforcement issues. This came after a summer of complaints regarding homes being converted into lock-off apartments, or accessory dwelling units, which violated codes in certain neighborhoods.

Members of the Vail Valley Composite team celebrated a team win at the Colorado High School Cycling League State Championships held in Eagle.

Week of Oct. 22, 2009

A feature in the Enterprise highlighted the Yoshikawa family. The family left Japan to experience American life for a year, and they resided in Eagle during that time.

The town of Eagle made the decision to allow medical marijuana dispensaries after a split vote.

The Gypsum town council was expected to approve a curfew for minors that would be from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a weeks.

Eagle Valley High School’s homecoming queen was Paige Genelin and king was Ross Clements. Students voted for Haley Monica as princess and Kevin Escobar as prince.

A memorial celebration for long-time Eagle County resident Charlotte Nottingham Oleson was held at the Diamond Star Ranch.

Eagle County Deputy Sheriff Gianni Robinson visited the children of Mountain Valley Lutheran Preschool as part of their Community Helpers Month.

Week of Oct. 21, 2004

Gypsum voters were asked to approve a one-cent sales tax increase to pay off the construction of a $10.5 million recreation facility.

Kids Voting U.S.A., a national program teaching kids the importance of hitting the polls on election day, was offered in the Eagle County schools.

The student-athletes of the week for EVHS were Brian Saldana for football, Chelsey Lueders for softball, Whitney Donohue for volleyball, Kyle Green for soccer, Marlis McChesney for dance and Jessica Gordan for cheerleading.

The annual McCoy Halloween Carnival fundraiser was set.

Cattle rancher Kathy Shoup of Gypsum was awarded the Silver Dam Award by the American Salers Association.

The Castle Peak Rifle and Pistol Club was set to open the Gypsum shooting range for special weekend hours. The cost was $5.

Students at Brush Creek Elementary prepared for their fourth year of a three-week theater workshop.

Week of Oct. 20, 1994

Actor Steven Seagal and camera crews were in the State Bridge area filming scenes for the movie “Under Siege II: Dark Territory.”

Downvalley residents welcomed the news that a four-plex movie theater was being built in Edwards.

Some Texas hunters helped wildlife officer Bill Heicher rescue a 250-pound spike elk that had become tangled in a barbed wire fence on Brush Creek.

30 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct.25, 1984

Eagle resident Mary Hoza was the subject of a community spotlight feature in the Enterprise.

George Yost was the first place winner in the Fall Snow Guessing Contest sponsored by Collett Enterprises. Yost correctly predicted that the first snow of the season would fall on October 14.

The Devils football team took the league title with a 41-12 win over the West Grand Mustangs.

40 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct. 24, 1974

The Eagle County School Board approved $70,000 in improvements to the Red Cliff School.

A California man was killed in a car-train crash in Gypsum. The victim’s car was parked on the tracks when the late-night collision occurred.

The grand opening of the new auditorium at EVHS featured a concert led by vocal music department teacher Dan Freeman and band teacher David Warble.

50 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct. 22, 1964

Fifty Zuni Indians were flown into the Eagle County Airport to do fire mop-up work on South Derby Creek. One of the firefighters was killed when he accidently walked into the rear propeller of a helicopter.

Forest Ranger Don Price reported a dozen fires on the White River National Forest during the hunting season.

Eagle County residents were mourning the death of Mable Colerick, who first came to Eagle County in 1906 as a school teacher at Fulford.

Guests at Sonja Faulkner’s third birthday party were Deena Starr, Jan and Jackie Phillips, Shirley Foral, Jeff Schyler, Kathy Harris, Shane Moran and Rhonda and Cheryl Harrison.

60 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct 21, 1954

There were two hunting accident victims during the first two days of hunting season. A Denver man was wounded in the shoulder when a hunter mistook him for a deer near Fulford. A second Denver hunter died near Deep Lake when a bullet fired by an unidentified hunter pierced his chest.

The final stretch of the road improvements in the 14-mile section between Wolcott and State Bridge was near completion.

Hunters were reminded that there would be no hunting allowed in the Camp Hale area, where military engineers and signal crews were working.

70 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct. 20, 1944

The Enterprise warned that every family in Eagle County would need to make a contribution in order to meet the United War Fund goal of $3,000.

Four men were sitting in the county jail after attempting to rob the Lundgren store in Gypsum.

Potato harvest was nearly completed in the lower valley, with ranchers reporting a greater yield than normal.

80 YEARS AGO

Week of Oct. 26, 1934

About 100 cattle and sheep ranchers turned out for a meeting in Eagle to discuss the possibility of organizing a grazing district on Forest Service lands.
