GYPSUM —The town of Gypsum, the Gypsum Recreation Center and the Gypsum Public Library are teaming up to present Home for the Holidays on Saturday.
The event will begin at the Gypsum Recreation Center with a free open house from 3 to 5 p.m.
“It is our eighth anniversary, and we invite the public to come in and enjoy our facilities,” said operations manager Anna Englehart.
Following the rec center open house, participants are invited to walk over to the Gypsum library at 5 p.m. for Gypsum’s holiday celebration.
“We will kick off the outdoor festivities with the countdown for the community tree lighting at 5:15 p.m., followed by the magical voices of the Eagle Valley High School Mad Melodies. Then warm up inside with cocoa and cookies compliments of the Eagle Valley Library District,” said Krista DeHerrera, Gypsum marketing and special projects coordinator.
Following the tree lighting ceremony, the winners of the annual Gypsum Holiday Lighting Contest will be announced. Judges will be scanning the neighborhoods of Gypsum through Thursday looking for winners in the following categories: Best Overall, Griswold Award and Ever “Green” Award. Winners will receive Gypsum Chamber gift certificates and Costco gift cards and the Ever “Green” winners will receive a credit toward their electric bill. In order to be considered for the town’s top categories, a nomination form must be submitted online at http://www.townofgypsum.com or at one of three town campus nomination sites: the Gypsum Rec Center, the library or town hall.
Following the announcement and depending on the amount of snow, a snowball chucking will be set up so kids can launch snowballs to great heights in a safe environment. Then, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive on a Gypsum Fire truck. Kids of all ages are welcome to visit with Santa.
