Eagle woman joins protest for imprisoned journalist

DENVER, Colorado ” A Colorado blogger and an X-ray technician who lives in Eagle, Colorado are among dozens of volunteers across the country taking part in a hunger strike in support of an American journalist imprisoned in Iran.

Roxana Saberi, who grew up in North Dakota, was convicted in Tehran last month of allegedly spying for the U.S. and was sentenced to eight years in prison after a one-day trial behind closed doors. Her lawyer is appealing the verdict.

Her father says Saberi went on a hunger strike. On Sunday, the FreeRoxana campaign launched a protest in which people will fast in 24-hour shifts so Saberi can end her fast.

Sara Hall, 31, of Eagle, attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., with Saberi and heard about the campaign through friends. She will fast on Tuesday.

“It breaks my heart that somebody my age in a horrific environment is experiencing what she is experiencing,” Hall said.

Denver blogger Mari Kurisato, 31, said she is fasting Monday to spread the message about Saberi and to support people who risk their lives to report news.
