A hometown girl could use some local support as she launches her song-writing career in a national contest.

Megan Houghton of Eagle is a 2008 graduate of Battle Mountain High School and a current senior at Colorado State University. She has entered her original song titled “Spin Me Around” in the national Texaco Country Showdown online contest and needs voters to visit the contest website to support her entry.

“Megan has a powerful voice, plays the guitar and loves writing music,” said her mother Sandy Houghton. “Her music might be likened to Taylor Swift. But former BMHS teacher Mr. Firth, her poetry club mentor who encouraged her to record, said her voice was better than Taylor’s.”

Sandy noted that Megan’s musical talent in 5th grade when she was given the role of Annie in the Port City Players 2001 community production in Seward, Alaska.

“But I recognized her talent very early on,” said Sandy. “As a 3-year-old she was interested in ‘Do You Know the Muffin Man’ but she also sang full throttle ‘Passionate Kisses’ right on beat with the radio. I was worried it was a negative influence.”

Participate in The Longevity Project

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

Sandy is not so worried now, but she does hope local residents will take Megan’s cause to heart. To move to the next level in the contest, Megan needs to be in at least fifth place by the end of September. As of Wednesday, she was in seventh place.

“We are asking locals to register, log in and vote daily through the end of September,” said Sandy. “She really needs the support of a broad range of votes. You can listen to her song online and the contest honors the best song content.”
