The crass commercialism of Christmas seems to invade our lives sooner each year. Before we could blow out the candles in our jack-o-lanterns or even put a turkey in the oven, Christmas tree farms popped up in previously vacant parking lots and stores quickly became saturated in garish red and green. It’s enough to make Charlie Brown shout “good grief” even more than thirty years later. But the Porchlight Players in Eagle have an early season’s greeting of a different kind: Their stage show “Uh-Oh! Here Comes Christmas!” ushers in the holidays with a laugh and a song. “This is basically a collection of stories by Robert Fulghum, author of ‘Everything I needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,'” says Lora Silagy, secretary and sometime actress with the Porchlight Players. “It looks at the commercialism of Christmas and how you can still get the feel for it, regardless of how commercial it becomes by highlighting the funny parts and the poignant parts that happen to all of us.” In this adaptation by Ernest Zulia and David Caldwell, actors serve both as performers and storytellers, taking the audience through fifteen vignettes that capture the spirit of modern day christmas – including the stress an the chaos that mingles with the carols and cheer.

“My favorite story is about a mother who decides to help out at the school auction,” Silagy says. “She decides to auction a dog that she finds at the pound, which she’s convinced is a purebreed, despite it’s mutt-like looks and behavior. When it comes time for the auction, she realizes she’s attached to the dog, and she begs her husband to win it for her. Meanwhile all of his friends know this, so they drive up the cost of the dog, knowing the husband will have to keep bidding until he wins. He ends up spending thousands of dollars for this horrendous pund puppy, just to keep his wife happy.” Eagle’s Porchlight Players started in 2004 as a creative outlet for amateur and professional actors alike in the Eagle/Gypsum area. The 83-member repertory includes former high-school actors who’ve rekindled a love for the stage and locals with professional training, like former Off-Broadway actor Lance Schober and “Uh-Oh” director Perpetua Bryan. Porchlight Players is still actively looking for behind-the-scenes specialists, though. “We have a wide range of talent here, between people who’ve done professional work and those who haven’t done anything since high school,” Silagy says. “We’re still rounding up volunteers to help behind the scenes. Right now, we’re all pretty much full of ourselves and want to be on stage.”
