Early morning truck crash shuts I-70 near Eagle

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

EAGLE, Colorado – A semi truck crashed early Tuesday morning on Interstate 70 between Eagle and Wolcott, closing eastbound lanes for several hours.

Markas Rodriguez, 48, of Grand Junction, was driving the semi westbound near milepost 150 when he fell asleep and drifted off the left side of the road, the State Patrol said.

The semi truck tractor struck the left guardrail and then skidded through the median and across the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70, blocking both lanes, police said. During the collision with the guardrail, both saddle tanks of the semi-truck were punctured and spilled out about 200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the road, which was contained until the cleanup crew arrived, according to authorities. The Colorado State Patrol Hazmat team responded for the fuel spill. Rodriguez was wearing his seatbelt and he was not injured in the crash. Alcohol and or drugs are not considered contributing factors at this time.

The initial call came in to the Colorado State Patrol at about 12:50 a.m.
