Edwards: A winemaker with a cause
EDWARD, Colorado “-Judd Wallenbrock, the winemaker from the Humanitas Wines, will visit Matthew’s restaurant in Edwards, Colorado Wednesday night. Matthew’s first began selling Humanitas Wines last summer, when owners Elena and Matt Jones learned that the wine not only taste good, but the profits benefit local charities.
Wallenbrock started making wine as a side project. He had been an executive in the wine business for more than 20 years, working for another winery and dreaming of starting his own. At the same time, he really wanted to do more to help those less fortunate. He really wanted to do something good.
Inspired by companies such as Paul Newman’s Own, Wallenbrock decided to start a winery dedicated to making great wines and donating the profits to charity.
“Specifically, the profits go to fund solutions to three very primary issues — hunger, affordable housing and education — and we’ve chosen Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity as our primary charities. However, we try to support whatever charity best addresses these issues community by community,” Wallenbrock said.
Next to the Humanitas wine listings on Matthew’s wine menu are the words “Good Cause,” which tend to spark questions.
“The questions spark an awareness that is not often featured on a wine list, but I am proud to do it,” Elena Jones said.
Wallenbrock has written checks to the Habitat for Humanity here in Eagle County as well as to the Colorado Chapter on behalf of the Humanitas wine sold in this area.
The dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The cost is $58. Reservations can be made on line through http://www.matthewsinedwards.com or by calling 970-926-8646.
