Edwards gets semi-pro soccer team
EDWARD, Colorado – The new Edward fieldhouse will be hosting a men’s semi-pro indoor soccer team beginning this winter.
The Western Eagle County Recreation District has signed a deal with the Premier Arena Soccer League to bring a team to Eagle County.
The team, which hasn’t been named yet, will play from December through March. The new fieldhouse will be ready to host games – and a crowd of up to 400 people – starting in January.
Teams in the league play seven to 10 games a season, and the Eagle County team will travel to the Front Range to play away games.
Steve Russell, director of the rec district, said he had been consulting with the league about what types of turf and other soccer facilities to include. Those conversations turned up the possibility of bringing a team here.
“We said, ‘Let’s get this going and see if it makes sense,'” Russell said.
The district paid a fee of $500 as part of the creation of the team. There will be a small admission fee to watch the games, Russell said.
The team will use all local players, and tryouts will be in August, Russell said.
The premier league has 60 teams across the country, said Commissioner Kevin Milliken. It is a development league for the Professional Arena Soccer League.
Premier League players range from former high school players to ex-college players to ex-pros, Milliken said. He compared the level of play to Double-A or Triple-A baseball.
Indoor soccer is more fast-paced than outdoor soccer, with three times as many shots on goal during the course of a game, Milliken said.
The $8.3 million, 57,000-square-foot fieldhouse project, which also includes a Sheriff’s Office station, is on track for a December completion, Russell said. It will be able to host sports including soccer, flag football, lacrosse, softball, dodgeball, basketball and gymnastics.
