Edwards man ID’d in fatal Vail Pass crash

Daily staff report

EAGLE COUNTY — The man who died in a two-vehicle crash on Vail Pass on Monday afternoon has been identified as Paul Myers, 67, of Edwards.

The crash occurred at about 4:56 p.m. on westbound Interstate 70 at mile marker 188 near Vail Pass.

A Jeep Commander driven by Myers was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in the right lane. A Freightliner truck tractor pulling a semi trailer, driven by 32-year-old Marin Mihaylov, of Mt. Prospect, Ill., was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in the right lane in front of the Jeep. The Jeep collided with the semi trailer that was being pulled by the truck tractor, the State Patrol said. The Jeep rotated counter clockwise off the north side of the roadway and came to rest on its wheels facing southeast, according to police. The truck tractor and trailer were driven onto the north shoulder of the roadway facing west.

Myers died on scene as a result of his injuries. Mihaylov was uninjured in the crash. Both of the drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, police said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The roadway remained closed from about 5:32 p.m. to 8:16 p.m., when the left lane was opened for traffic. Both lanes were reopened at 9:09 p.m.
