Edwards parish to sell employee housing

EDWARDS, Colorado ” New buildings for the St. Clare of Assisi parish in Edwards may mean a few more affordable homes for county residents.

Plans for the sale of up to 16 affordable condominiums owned by the parish are in the final stages, county officials said.

The original plans for the parish include church building, rec center, housing for priests and maybe expanding the school, so selling the homes will help the parish complete those plans, said Bob Finlay of Prudential Colorado Properties in Vail, who is handling the sales.

The 950-square-foot, 2-bedroom, 2-bath condos were owned and rented out by the parish and used for employee housing. Now the parish, and the Denver Archdiocese who oversees it, wants to sell them affordable housing to Eagle County residents.

The starting price will be $249,600, which is right about what someone earning median income in the county can afford, said Alex Potente, the county’s housing director.

The parish may keep a couple units, and current renters will be offered the units first, then the rest will be sold. Negotiations for the homes have been ongoing since February 2006, County Planning Manager Bob Narracci said.

The homes will be deed-restricted, meaning they can only be sold to people working and living in Eagle County. The deed-restriction policies and details will probably be modeled after those of Miller Ranch, Finlay said.

The county is still working on those plans, Potente said.

“There will probably be another round of discussion. It will probably be approved early next year,” he said.
