Edwards’ Red Canyon high opens this spring

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” Construction should finish this year on two new schools in Eagle County.

Red Canyon High School’s new campus should be ready for students before the school year ends, and June Creek Elementary will be open for classes this August.

Both projects are a part of the $128 million bond passed in November 2006, which gave the school district money to expand and renovate old buildings.

Here’s a progress update:

Red Canyon

At Red Canyon High School, workers are putting up siding and drywall, as well as installing wiring and cables for computers networks and phone systems.

The school is being built on land adjacent to Berry Creek Middle School’s baseball field, across the street from its old location, and will work with Red Canyon’s other campus in Eagle.

The school should be ready for students this spring, district officials say.

“This is the first one out of the chute. It’s looking good, and it’s real exciting,” said

Diana Scott, director of buildings and grounds for the school district.

The new facility wasn’t on the original $128 million school bond approved in November, but the school board decided to build the school after getting a better than anticipated deal on the premium bond sale.

June Creek

June Creek is on schedule to greet its first students this August.

Construction crews are working on the steel framing of the building, interior framing, masonry and installing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical wiring.

The school is being built on Miller Ranch where Red Canyon High School used to be. The school is being modeled on a standardized design for Eagle County elementary schools and will look almost exactly like Brush Creek and Red Hill elementaries downvalley.

In December, the school board approved boundaries for June Creek, which determine who can attend the school based on where they live.

Neighborhoods included in June Creek’s boundaries are Singletree, Arrowhead, Cordillera Valley Club, Lake Creek Village, Crazy Horse Circle, the Reserve, Old Edwards Estates, Miller Ranch, and Brett Ranch.

Eagle Valley High School

Design work is still being done on the school, with construction expected to begin this summer.

The renovations will include a new student commons area, a lofted entry way, auditorium and a technology wing. The new common area will likely have a food court-like atmosphere with lots of natural lighting and will replace the cramped space that serves as a lunchroom and entrance to the gym and auditorium.

New Battle Mountain High School

The new Battle Mountain High School, being built in Edwards, should be ready in fall 2009. When construction crews can get enough snow off the ground, they’ll start excavation work for the concrete foundation.

The detailed construction design for the school is about 95 percent complete, Scott said.

Existing Battle Mountain

The school district still hasn’t decided how to use the existing Battle Mountain building and has formed a committee that will make recommendations to the Board of Education.
