El Paso clerk may require proof of citizenship for voters

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ” El Paso County’s top elections official says he may require voters to show proof of citizenship, hoping to trigger a lawsuit that would force the courts or the Legislature to take up the issue.
A bill to require proof of citizenship to vote died in the Legislature last year.
El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Bob Balink says the state should require voters to have a government-issued photo ID because only citizens can vote legally.

Balink says that if he starts requiring proof of citizenship, he would likely trigger a lawsuit to determine whether it’s legal.
Opponents say the requirement would be unfair to people who are entitled to vote but have trouble getting ID.
