Emergency shelter open for those stranded in Vail

Daily Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, COLORADO ” Due to the closure of Interstate 70 eastbound over Vail Pass, an emergency shelter is open in Vail at the Vail Interfaith Chapel, located at 19 Vail Road just south of the Main Vail Roundabout.

The free shelter is being staffed by the Salvation Army and is available to anyone who needs food and a warm place to stay until the pass is reopened. Pets will be admitted to the shelter, but must be leashed or in a crate. The Chapel is providing travelers with food, water, cots, blankets and other provisions. For shelter information, call 970-926-4444.

If the Chapel fills to capacity, a second shelter will be opened in the Vail Municipal Building, located at 75 S. Frontage Road, just west of the Main Vail Roundabout, where free parking will be available within the municipal complex. If needed, a third shelter will then be activated at St. Patrick’s Church in Minturn, located on U.S. Highway 24 at I-70 exit 171. The church is at 476 Pine St.

For current updates on shelter locations and road conditions, listen to local radio, call the road condition line at 970-479-2226 or visit http://www.cotrip.org/rWeather/All_Alerts_033108_020803.html

The east and westbound lanes of Vail Pass have been closed at mile marker 176 and 195 since approximately 11:15 p.m. Sunday as a winter storm continues to sweep through the region causing a series of accidents. There is no estimated time of reopening. An alternate eastbound route around Vail Pass is via Battle Mountain/Tennessee Pass to Leadville along Highway 24 South then to Copper Mountain along Highway 91 North (61 miles). Use exit 171 from I-70. This is a two-lane mountain pass; driving conditions can be treacherous during snowstorms.

For your safety, motorists are advised to avoid parking on the North or South Frontage roads in Vail during the closure. Eastbound traffic on the South Frontage Road is being limited to local traffic only.
