Everest climber to speak at snowshoe dinner

VAIL – Mount Everest expedition leader Dan Aguilar will be speaker at the 12th annual Snowshoe Shuffle Community Dinner Friday at Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa. Sponsored by Vail Valley Medical Center’s foundation, the annual Snowshoe Shuffle fund-raiser consists of a 10K, 5K and one-mile fun run or walk at the top of Vail Mountain. Attracting as many as 1,000 participants a year, 100 percent of the shuffle’s proceeds are go to the Women’s Cancer Coalition, a local volunteer group that works through the Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Edwards. This years proceeds will help provide free mammograms, cancer screenings and health fairs for women in Eagle, Summit and Lake counties.The community dinner is held each year the evening before the race. An accomplished climber, Aguilar, a 32-year resident of Vail, has over the past 26 years ascended some of the world’s highest peaks. He has been on 20 international climbing expeditions, including the Mt. Everest expeditions in 1993 and 1995. He also is a member of the Vail Mountain Rescue Group.The community dinner is at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The event includes a buffet dinner, cash bar, guest speaker, music and prize drawings. Tables can be reserved for $500 and individual tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children ages 13 and under.
