What is the organization’s mission and who benefits from its work?
The mission of the Family Learning Center is to work in partnership with the community as a non-denominational, not-for-profit organization to serve children and families of the Eagle River Valley. We provide affordable, quality, early childhood learning programs and child care, by using developmentally appropriate practices in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment. Affordable quality childcare and education is an essential community service, but quality care and education is costly and many young children do not have a safe, educational environment as a result. In addition, many parents benefit from education in proper child rearing. The Family Learning Center seeks to provide the highest quality childcare and education for both children and families.
Where does your funding come from?
Tuition covers only 75 percent to 80 percent of our operating costs. The short fall is funded through grants, corporate and individual contributions, and fundraising events like the annual Barbara Treat Memorial Golf Tournament. This support helps maintain affordable tuition and need-based scholarships for 25 percent of our children. Tuition for all children is provided below actual cost.
How many staff members work for you?
The Family Learning Center currently employees 36 full and part-time staff members and is managed by a very dedicated board of directors made up of 12 members.
Anything else you’d like the community to know about the organization?
The foundation of the early childhood learning programs at the Family Learning Center is based on the teaching strategies of the Creative Curriculum. The goals and objectives of the Creative Curriculum encompasses learning in all areas of development: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. This approach places a high priority on creating an environment that encourages children to experiment, explore and pursue their own interests. Creative Curriculum enhances children’s learning through their play. Children’s learning takes place when they interact with other people and their environment. Teachers observe children’s activities and use these observations to plan the environment. The environment consists of the interest areas and materials that are set up in the classroom.
The Family Learning Center also embraces and teaches the key values of respect, compassion, independence, celebration of diversity, joy of learning, appreciation of nature and honesty. These values are integrated into the curriculum with a school-wide emphasis on one each month.
