Ex-principal say’s he’ll sue Steamboat school board
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado ” The former principal of Steamboat Springs High School has notified the school board he plans to file suit alleging the board unfairly decided against renewing his contract.
The board voted 3-2 in June not to renew Mike Knezevich’s contract after former interim superintendent Sandra Smyser, now superintendent of Eagle County Schools, gave him an unfavorable review.
Knezevich claims the review was unfair because Smyser had little direct contact with him and no firsthand knowledge of his performance. Knezevich sent the board a letter dated Sept. 9 saying he will seek $400,000 in lost wages and damages.
“This is an issue between Mr. Knezevic and Steamboat Springs School District, and Eagle County Schools has no position on the matter,” said Brooke Skjonsby, director of communications for Eagle County Schools.
The Steamboat Springs school board met in closed session on Monday to discuss the letter. Steamboat Superintendent Shalee Cunningham says the board made no decisions. She declined further comment.
