Fall sports teams soar

Don Rogers

Wow, this certainly was a big fall for high school sports. So many local teams doing so well, like a floodlight switched on.Eagle Valley football is still marching along in the playoffs. They’ve got Steamboat Saturday. The Battle Mountain girls cross country team won the state title a few weeks back. The boys weren’t far behind, winning the Western Slope and finishing 10th out of 70 something 4A teams in the state. Best ever for both.Battle Mountain volleyball finished third in the state, best ever. They sure came out of nowhere if you weren’t a close observer. And the whole team returns next year.Battle Mountain soccer did great, too, winning the most games in the program’s history and advancing further than ever before into the playoffs, to the quarterfinals. So fall for Battle Mountain is a bunch of best evers. And Eagle Valley football looks promising. Vail Christian volleyball had their best league record ever, before falling in the district playoffs. And Vail Mountain school volleyball got to the state semifinals, falling to the state champs. The coaches of these programs and the rest of the teams this fall need wheelbarrows to carry all the all-league and all-state honors, along with Coach of the Year winners Brian Doyon for Battle Mountain volleyball and David Cope for soccer. And don’t forget the coaches of those state champs – Robert Parish, Kelli Witter and Ashley Weaver. In a word: Wow.Vail, Colorado
