AVON, Colorado ” The town of Avon’s annual Icing on the Lake event is Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. The event, which is free and especially popular with families, kicks off the winter season for Nottingham Park in Avon, said Danita Chirachillo, special events coordinator for the Avon Recreation Center. During the winter season, the cabin is open from noon to 8 p.m. each day.

Families can enjoy ice skating on Nottingham Lake with only $1 skate rentals and then gather around the bonfire and enjoy a cup of hot cider. There will also be face-painting, a balloon sculptor, winter holiday crafts, snowmobile rides for kids, adorable reindeer and best of all … Santa will there from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring a canned food item for the Salvation Army and receive a warm, hearty bowl of chili!

New this year is a giant ice sculpture, Chirachillo said.

“It’s shaped like a bullseye and kids can throw snowballs through a hole in the middle and win prizes,” she said.

“There will also be Icecapade-type games, as long as we can get on the ice, which depends on how much snow we get the next few days,” Chirachillo said. “We’ll do competitions like longest slide, that should be fun for the kids.”

Children who attend the event can participate in various arts and crafts activities, including decorating a square of cloth for a quilt that staff members at the Avon Recreation Center will put together and display at the recreation center this winter.

The entire event is free. No dogs or alcohol allowed. Ice skating availability is determined by the weather. Call 970-748-4060 for more information.
