BEAVER CREEK – Gingerbread bakers and candy-makers get creative at the third annual Fantasy Gingerbread House Competition held in conjunction with the 25th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and fireworks display in Beaver Creek today.One hundred percent of silent auction proceeds from the gingerbread house contest will benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a local charity serving abused and neglected children in Eagle, Summit, Lake and Clear counties. People bid to take their favorite gingerbread house home with them. Highest bidders in years’ past said the confections are a perfect home decoration for the holiday season.”The more candy, frosting and gingerbread, the better. In the past we’ve seen everything from life-size gingerbread doghouses to intricately designed homes. It’s sure to be a festive evening as we kick off our silver anniversary season with a traditional tree lighting, fireworks display, free ice skating and much more,” said Tony O’Rourke, executive director of the Beaver Creek Resort Company.The winner of the “Kids’ Holiday Wish for a Better World Poetry Contest” will read his/her winning poem at the Tree Lighting Ceremony today around 6 p.m. and will help to light the tree. The winner also recieves a $100 savings bond and tickets to family-themed shows at the Vilar Center. Holiday events today in Beaver Creek10 a.m.-3 p.m. – Ice skating on the Black Family Ice Rink.Noon-2 p.m. – Helmut Fricker Duo performs on the plaza.3-8:30 p.m.- Gingerbread houses will be pre-made and judged, then displayed from 3-8:30 p.m. in the Jackson Room of The Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa. 3-7:30 p.m.- The houses will be available for purchase in a silent auction in the Jackson Room of Park Hyatt. Houses will be delivered immediately following the show to the homes or businesses of the winning bidders. 5:30 p.m. – Ceremony begins on Beaver Creek Plaza with entertainment provided by Mountain Harmony Singers, Helmut Fricker, Shannon Tanner and Sean Pack.5:45 p.m. – Guests receive candles to welcome the new holiday season.6 p.m. – Santa leads the count down for the tree lighting and fireworks display in the plaza. The winner of the “Kids’ Holiday Wish for a Better World Poetry Contest” will read the winning poem and light the tree.6:30-7 p.m.- Public celebration featuring Santa, hot chocolate and cookies takes place in the Vilar Center lobby. 7 p.m. – Free viewing of “The Santa Clause” at the Vilar Center.
