Fatal Eagle fire ‘appears accidental’

EAGLE, Colorado – John Forsyth, 57, died in Monday night’s fire in the Upper Kaibab subdivision, Deputy Coroner Mike Kerst said.

“The cause of death was thermal burns and smoke inhalation,” he said.

Forsyth had been a renter at the home on Green Mountain Drive. The home’s owner, Ryan Cox, was not at the house when the blaze broke out.

Fire Marshal Tom Wagenlander said the fire most likely started in the northwest corner of the kitchen, on a countertop between the stove and the sink.

“The actual cause is still under investigation but it appears to be accidental,” he said.

A damage estimate is not yet available, Wagenlander said.

A neighbor reported the fire around 11 p.m. Monday night and firefighters battled the blaze for five hours.
