Fatal wreck closes Hwy. 6 in Gypsum

GYPSUM ” A head-on collision in Gypsum Monday claimed a truck driver’s life.

John Rodacker, 19, of Eagle, was identified as the person killed in the accident by Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis.

Rodacker was killed when the Alpine Lumber truck he was driving collided head-on with a truck owned by Alpine Vending and Video of Avon. The driver of the Alpine Vending truck ” who had not been identified at press time ” was taken by ambulance to Vail Valley Medical Center.

The accident happened about 2 p.m. Monday, and closed Highway 6 between Eagle and Gypsum for several hours.

Police had not released the cause of the accident by late Monday afternoon, but the wind was blowing very hard at the time.

“It was like driving in a tornado,” Gypsum resident Pam Schultz said. “There was a lot of dust from the wind. It was hard to keep the car on the road.”

The peak wind measured at the Eagle County Airport Monday afternoon was 62.7 mph, which was recorded about the time of the accident.
