Feds get 3 applications for oil shale leases
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has received three applications in its second offering of oil shale research and development leases in the Rockies.
Officials from ExxonMobil Corp. and Arizona-based AuraSource Inc. told The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction that they applied for the 160-acre leases on federal land in Colorado and Utah.
The first lease offer garnered about 20 applications. Six leases were approved.
Industry officials have said the drop in interest is likely due to the smaller size of the potential commercial leases.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in October announced new environmental safeguards and timelines for progress for the new leases.
