Fee hike for Colorado roads backed by Senate panel

DENVER, Colorado ” A proposal to hike car registration fees to pay for bridge and road repairs in Colorado has passed its first test at the state Capitol.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted Tuesday to send the measure (Senate Bill 108) to another committee for review.

Under the plan, owners of passenger cars and many sport utility vehicles would have to pay an extra $32 next year and $41 the following year. Owners of larger vehicles and trucks would pay more according to vehicle weight.

The proposal also would allow tolls on existing state highways and would set up a study on charging Colorado motorists based on the number of miles they drive.
