Fire damages four condos in Eagle-Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE-VAIL – Firefighters battled a structure fire at an Eagle-Vail condominium complex Sunday night.
Eagle River Fire Protection District firefighters were summoned to the Whiskey Hill Condominiums at 10:20 p.m. Crews arrived and encountered snow and wind so fierce that they could not immediately see the smoke and flames coming from the roof, fire officials said. Firefighters found fire in the walls, ceilings and attic.
Officials believe the fire originated in a chimney chase and spread to the attic. A total of four units were damaged in the fire resulting from fire, smoke and suppression efforts. The occupants of the home were relocated by the Salvation Army.
Another six units were not damaged by the fire.
“Those families were able to return to their homes around 1 a.m.,” said Eagle River Fire Protection District Chief Charlie Moore.
It took firefighters approximately one hour to bring the fire under control, and another hour to completely extinguish the hot spots.
There were no injuries in the fire. Road conditions were extremely icy, and the wind and driving snow made it initially difficult to set up fire trucks and deploy ladders, Moore said.
Eagle River Fire District was assisted by Vail, Eagle and Gypsum fire departments and the Eagle County Ambulance District and Eagle County Sheriff. A total of 30 firefighters responded to the call. A formal investigation into the cause of the fire will begin on Monday morning, Moore said.
