Fire forces evacuation at Avon Wal-Mart

Daily Staff Report

AVON – Shoppers were asked to evacuate the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Avon when a fire broke out on the roof early Saturday evening, law enforcement and company officials said.Workmen noticed an air conditioning unit had caught fire while they were measuring snow depths on the roof to determine if it needed to be cleared off, according to Wal-Mart spokesman Marty Heires. Store managers notified fire and law enforcement officials, who then worked with employees to evacuate shoppers while the fire was extinguished, he said.”The Fire Department put the fire out very quickly, and we had the store back up and operating probably within the hour,” Heires said.About half of the store’s occupants were evacuated before the situation was safe enough for store operations to continue, said Sgt. Stephen Hodges of the Avon Police Department.”Wal-Mart’s really good about that,” Hodges said. “We know all the managers there, and we got everything done very smoothly.”Vail, Colorado
