EAGLE-VAIL ” A fire that burned a tree between Beaver Creek Mountain and the Eagle-Vail Golf Club was under control by Sunday night, said Battalion Chief George Wilson of the Eagle River Fire Protection District.

Nine firefighters put out the burning lodgepole pine on U.S. Forest Service land using water, chain saws and dirt, Wilson said. A helicopter dropped water on it a few times as a precaution, he said.

The fire probably was not caused by people, he said. In the past week, lighting may have struck the area and warmed up the tree so that it finally caught fire in the hot, dry weather, he said.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. Sunday.
