Fire truck rolls on off-ramp near Edwards
Vail, CO Colorado
EDWARDS, Colorado – A fire truck from the Eagle River Fire Protection District rolled onto its side just off Interstate 70 Saturday morning after it swerved to avoid a man in the road.
The pumper truck was responding to an accident on the interstate at about 9 a.m. As it approached the Wilmore Lake exit heading west on I-70, the truck encountered a motorist standing in the right lane of the road, next to his disabled vehicle, which had spun out and hit a guardrail, said Fire Chief Charlie Moore.
“Traveling at approximately 25 miles per hour, our employee made a split-second decision to take the exit ramp to avoid hitting the stranded motorist,” Moore said. “As a result of that life-saving maneuver, our reserve pumper truck lost control on the ‘glare ice’ and rolled on its side.”
No one was hurt, and no citations were issued, Moore said. The truck was insured and damages are being assessed, he added.
