Fishing pier accessible to disabled planned for Camp Hale
The U.S. Forest Service will be working with Trout Unlimited and other civic groups to build an accessible fishing pier at a pond in Camp Hale south of Red Cliff next summer.
The pier will provide wheelchair-dependent anglers access to the five-acre pond and a short interpretive trail alongside the pond. Two-thirds of the $30,000 project will be funded by the Forest Service, which will rely heavily on volunteer labor. The remainding funds will be provided by other organizations.
From 1941 until 1965 Camp Hale was the training base for the elite 10th Mountain Division. It now is a popular Forest Service recreation and camping area.
To make sure there will be fish available, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is expected to stock the pond with catchable and fingerling-sized trout.
