flatlander:The need for speed
Vail CO, Colorado
ROUTT COUNTY ” There comes a time in every man’s life when speed matters.
Never mind that “speed kills” only that there comes a time when the axis of mortality and horsepower intersect.
At this moment, there are two outcomes: death or addiction. Funny thing, horsepower. There’s a tingle in the in the right calf muscle that forces the toes all the way to the floor. It’s a tightness that needs to be fed, more and more as tires howl and light poles appear to bend inward.
This jones was fed a little when my buddy, Andy, stopped by with a yellow ’07 Corvette. It was a stunner, even though it was the stripped down model. Even the low-end ‘Vette comes with 400 horsepower, 6 speed gear box and rubber as wide as two cigar boxes.
See, Andy’s got the gig that journalists lie awake at night hoping for … he reviews new cars. And not just economy cars, either. He gets the good stuff: Corvettes, Porsches, Jaguars, Jeeps, Range Rovers, Mercedes, BMW, to name a few.
Rural Routt County seemed a great place to let the horses run.
We wound it up, shut her down, explored passing power and discussed power bands leaping from the aluminum V-8 sending bhps to the rubber.
The amenities of the ‘Vette we tried out were few (not a super-hot stereo and nothing particularly special about the interior) but the special part was under the hood and on the rims. A hot motor and good skins make all the difference.
It was quite a rush.
