As President Obama assesses the nation’s crumbling infrastructure and makes good on the promise to put Americans to work fixing our highways and bridges, he might also take a long hard look at the snow capping our Rocky Mountains this winter, especially as it affects the nation east of the Continental Divide.
Come spring, the deeper that snowpack is, the more likely there are to be serious disruptive floods throughout most of the Mississippi Valley states. While Republicans may froth at this suggestion, the president should consider a long-term Tennessee Valley Authority-style engineering project both to control destructive flooding, shore up the country’s fresh water and energy supplies and show the world we are both willing and able to invest in our future to solve our problems.
