Flood warnings spurred by large Colorado snowpack

DENVER, Colorado ” Three people drowned over the weekend in separate swimming or rafting accidents on Colorado rivers that are at high levels because of the spring runoff.

This winter’s large snowpack means the rivers are running higher and faster than they have in about a decade.

Flood advisories and warnings have been issued across the state. Nineteen rafters had to be rescued on the Eagle River Monday when three rafts capsized.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for the Yampa and Elk rivers in northwest Colorado and the Arkansas River in the south. A flood watch is in place for the East River above Gunnison.
