Flying 101

Gary Wingo

In the wildlife sanctuary of my backyard, I observed a mother robin coax her baby out of the nest for his very first flying lesson – a real-life “Discovery Channel” moment. The little robin perched precariously on the edge of the birdbath, preparing to take the plunge. Teetering back, he would fall in the cool water; leaning forward, he would fall to the ground. His mother and I watched with rapt attention as the little fella struggled with this life-changing decision. His mom chattered encouragement and from my hiding place, I hoped desperately, “You can do it! You can make it! Go for it!” My heart raced as I sensed the moment was near. Would he resign in defeat or step out in faith? What if he failed? With one final glance at his mother, he leapt and flew – all of 15 feet, crashing into the rocks below! The Wright Brothers would’ve been proud! It was the flight of the Kittyhawk all over again! Mother robin flew to her child’s side to help him back to his feet. The whole event reminded me of how my own parents compelled me out of our home, teaching me, loving me, and letting me fail even if it meant pain and struggle. I’ve come to realize that our Heavenly Father teaches us in the same manner as this mother robin. He coaxes us to take baby steps, He lets us try to fly on our own and crash. Why? So we can learn to trust Him, so that we can put our full dependency in the God and Father who loves us so much that He lets us crash so that we can learn to fly. Hard lessons don’t feel good and we are often taught to quit if it gets too difficult. On the contrary, the Lord can teach us and bless us far more effectively through our mistakes rather than our successes. The Lord’s power is made perfect in our weakness (II Corinthians 12:9). Just as the robin mom continued to work with her child, so our Heavenly Father hangs in there with us when we when we fail. He is our Great Encourager who never gives up!So keep the faith. Embrace God’s teaching process in your life. He loves you and wants to instruct you in the middle of pain so that our refinement and future is complete and fulfilled. God’s Word encourages us: “O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, You are the Potter. We are the work of Your hands…As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you, says the Lord.” Isaiah 64:8, 66:13. Take that step of faith and soar! Trust your journey to Jesus Christ who really loves you and wants to teach you to fly. Then the joy of adventure and discovery will be yours forever!Gary Wingo leads a study on Jesus Christ Sundays at 9 a.m. in Edwards.Vail, Colorado
