AVON — An American family embarks upon a journey in search of the truth behind our food system in the documentary “Food Patriots.” This film will be featured at the Sustainable Film Series on Tuesday at Loaded Joe’s in Avon and Jan. 19 at The Dusty Boot in Eagle; both showings start at 6:30 p.m.

“Food Patriots” follows the Spitz family across the United States as they cultivate a story about communities that are driving a conscious change through food. People they meet along the way support sustainable food systems by growing organic food, starting community gardens, buying local food and demanding fresh and healthy food access for everyone.

The term food patriot is used to describe ordinary people taking revolutionary steps to advocate for community-based agriculture by changing the way they eat, buy and teach the next generation about food. Film creator Jeff Spitz reminds us “consumers dictate what farmers grow, and when we shop, we are voting for the world we want to see.”

Economic Empowerment

The film encourages economic empowerment by asking all Americans to make a 10 percent shift in their buying habits to include fresh or local food; through our collaborative purchasing power, we can make a difference in the future of our food system.

The Sustainable Community Film Series — a project of Walking Mountains Science Center — is intended to raise awareness and encourage community dialogue about environmental, economic and social issues afflicting our world.
