A former Avon police sergeant arrested in May on charges of possession of child pornography pleaded guilty in a Denver court room last week, Jeff Dorschner, press officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said Tuesday.

Avon resident Robert Gallen, 51, was arrested in May after he was found to be in the possession of computer disks with images of child pornography.

His sentencing is scheduled for 8 a.m., Sept. 10, Dorschner said.

Gallen could face up to five years in federal prison and as much as $250,000 in fines, he said.

Gallen appeared before a U.S. District Court judge in Denver for a detention hearing last month when the judge opted to transport him to a halfway house pending trial, he said. Gallen was since transferred to a halfway house, although Dorschner declined to disclose its location.

“His movements will be monitored at the halfway house 24 hours a day,” Dorschner said.

Gallen had been under investigation since February on charges of child pornography after the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip, law-enforcement officials said. He resigned from the Avon Police Department in April.

Three days after the Avon Police Department requested a full investigation, and the FBI secured a search warrant on Gallen’s house. Police found Gallen in possession of about 10 floppy disks with images of child pornography, law-enforcement officials said.

Gallen was placed on administrative leave Feb. 28, the day the search warrant was issued, until the outcome of the investigation was completed.

In early April, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation met with the Eagle County District Attorney’s Office, informing the office of Gallen’s pending arrest. Concurrent with the criminal investigation, the Avon Police Department requested an internal investigation through the Montrose office of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Those reports resulted in Gallen’s resignation with the Avon Police Department.

During the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s probe, the bureau uncovered evidence that Gallen apparently had accessed child pornography sites on a computer about five years ago in Pennsylvania. Gallen is a retired sergeant from the West Chester Police Department in Pennsylvania.

“Apparently, only members of his family knew about it,” said Avon Police Chief Jeff Layman in a previous interview.

Gallen started with the Avon Police Department May 14, 2001, as a police officer. He was promoted to sergeant in June of 2002.
