COPPER MOUNTAIN – Copper Mountain housing employees found a seasonal employee dead in his room Monday afternoon at “The EDGE” employee housing building. A syringe and a substance that tested positive for heroin was also found in his room, according to a press release from Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.Jason Laplante, 25, had been working at Copper Mountain since January and was from Pembroke Pines, Fla. A cause of death will not be determined for at least two weeks, while Richardson awaits test results from Jefferson County. Employees were tipped off that something was wrong because they hadn’t had any contact with Laplante despite recent attempts to reach him, said Copper Mountain spokesman Carlos Garcia.”They were giving notices of late payments, evictions, that kind of stuff, 72-hour notices and he wasn’t responding to any of that kind of stuff. Eventually, it got to the point where they wanted to know what was going on and got into the room,” Garcia said.Laplante had been dead for at least a week, Richardson’s press release said. Copper Mountain maintains a no drug policy in the EDGE rooms that residents agree to when they sign a lease, Garcia said.”There’s a fine line between respecting privacy and the no drug policy,” he said. “In terms of active enforcement, I think that would be an issue that might start to infringe on privacy.”Garcia couldn’t confirm in what department Laplante worked or how long he had lived at the EDGE, but could confirm that he did not have a roommate. The population of the EDGE fluctuates and is very low right now due to the off-season, although Garcia didn’t have the exact numbers of how many people live there.A counselor from Colorado West Mental Health Center was available at the Edge on Tuesday to talk to employees and residents of the building.Vail, Colorado
