Former employee sentenced in day care center fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ” A Colorado Springs woman is being ordered to spend 60 days in jail and serve 10 years probation for burning down a day care center where she worked.

A district judge ordered the sentence Monday for 45-year-old Dlyn “Candy” Witt. She had pleaded guilty to a charge of felony arson in September.

Witt had been at the Sunshine Learning Center for five months when she set it on fire, saying she wanted to help the owners get a new building.

Co-owner Allen Rowlison says more than 100 children were using the center before the fire, but at least half those families left after the blaze and never returned to the refurbished center.

District Judge Edward Colt also ordered Witt to pay restitution, which could add up to more than 1 million dollars.
